About International Payments

What is an International Payment?

International payments, also known as cross-border payments or telegraphic transfers, is a payment from a single funding account to one or more nominated beneficiary accounts worldwide using an ANZ-supported and tradeable currency. International payments often involve two currencies where a foreign currency exchange rate is required. 

Payment Method Rules for International payments

  • Value date will default with the current or next business date if the payment is created on a non-business date or after payment cut-off
  • Non-business day - ANZ Transactive – Global will not allow you to create a payment where the Value Date is a non-business day (e.g., weekend, public holiday, bank holiday) or a currency holiday
  • Future value date can be selected up to 20 days
  • Cut-off time vary and are dependent on the currencies used.
  • Payment currency includes all ANZ-supported and tradeable currencies
  • Maximum payment value is 99,999,999,999.99
  • Maximum number of payment instructions is 5,000 for an itemised payment
  • MT101 files for each payment instruction, is processed as a single batch
  • Same currency International Payments can be created using other methods as listed below.

Who can create an International Payment?

Eligible users with Payment Management role permissions and account access can create and manage an International Payment based on your organisation's predetermined user permissions and payment settings. These role permissions can include:
  • Manage Payments - Adhoc (Adhoc & Approved Beneficiaries)
  • Manage Payments - Approved Beneficiary / Templates
  • Manage Payments - Import Payments
  • Manage Payments - FX Allowed
If Confidential Data Group is selected in the payment, users with entitlements to the Confidential Data Group can view and action the payment.

The following image is an example of an international payment screen with fields including the division, debit account, value date and cut-off time, payment name and reference, and beneficiary details.
  • Cut-off time (near the value date) indicates the payment method cut-off time, based on the originating jurisdiction and payment currencies
  • The time zone and format (near the value date) are displayed as per your Settings & Preferences
  • The ANZ Transactive - Global mobile app will display the cut-off time in the payment time zone.

International Payment video

Create an International Payment

There are multiple ways you can create an international payment from the Payments menu. Choose from the following options:

  1. Click Create Payment > International Payment or International Salary Payment (see step-by-step instructions below)
  2. Click Create Payment > Use Payment Template
  3. Click Create Payment > Upload Payment File - MT101
  4. Click Create Payment > Use Past Payment
  5. Click Current Payments > New > International Payment or International Salary Payment (see step-by-step instructions below)
STEP ACTION
1 Click Payments > Create Payment menu or
Click Payments > Current Payments menu > New
2 Click International Payment or International Salary Payment
3 If required, select the Division the payment will be made from.
If you are entitled to more than one division, you can set a default division for future payments.
4 Select the Debit Account
5 Value Date will default with the current or next business date.
If required, choose a future value date up to 20 days.
6 Enter a Payment Name up to 16 characters that will appear on payment reports
7 Enter a Payment Reference up to 16 characters that will appear within the narrative on the funding account, beneficiary's statement and payment reports
8 Select the Payment Currency
9 If required, enter a Debit Advice Description up to 140 characters that will appear on the Debit Advice, where debit account is CNY
10 If required, select a Confidential Data Group
11 If required, tick Enter Amounts in Debit Currency if payment amount is in a different currency
12 If required, tick the Individual Debits indicator to generate a separate debit entry on your account for each individual beneficiary payment instruction, where debit account is CNY
This option is not available for International Salary Payments

To reduce the risk of fraud, ANZ recommends you always confirm beneficiary details when processing a payment.
Click Add to add one or more beneficiary details using the following options:
Add Beneficiary from your Beneficiaries list
Search and select the Beneficiary from the Beneficiary Name field, then proceed to next steps. If required, click Add again to add additional beneficiaries.
Add New Beneficiary
Users must have entitlements to create new beneficiaries to complete these steps.
STEP ACTION
1 Enter Beneficiary Name
2 Choose from the following options:
  • IBAN - for payments to Europe and other selected countries
  • Other
3 Enter Account Number/IBAN
4 Select Account Type: (Beneficiaries in China)
  • Resident Individual
  • Non-Resident Individual
  • Resident Corporate
  • Non-Resident Corporate
5 If required, enter a single Beneficiary Email Address up to 255 characters if sending a Beneficiary Advice
6 Enter Beneficiary Address up to 35 characters per line and City
7 Select Beneficiary Country or Region
8 Select Beneficiary Bank Country or Region
9 Select the Clearing Code: Options based on Beneficiary Bank Country or Region include:
  • SWIFT
  • Australian Bank State Branch (BSB) Code (AU) - AU
  • CHIPS Universal Identifier (US) - CH
  • Fedwire Routing Numbers (US) - FW
  • UK Domestic Sort Code (GB) - SC
10 Click Search, to search and select the Beneficiary Bank details.
If requested to use ANZ's AU Swift Code for your Beneficiary Bank, please select ANZBAU3MXXX and not ANZBAU3R.
11 If required, tick Add this beneficiary to Address Book
12 Click Proceed
13 If required, click Add again to add additional beneficiaries.
Proceed to next steps.
14 If required, enter Client Reference up to 16 characters if different from the Payment Reference prepopulated
15 Enter the Beneficiary payment amount
16 If required, click Beneficiary Payment Details icon to view or update additional beneficiary information:

  • SHA - you pay outgoing transfer charges and the beneficiary pays the correspondent bank charges. The beneficiary will receive the payment minus the correspondent bank charges. 
  • OUR - you pay all transfer charges, and the beneficiary receives the full amount of the payment
  • BEN - the beneficiary pays all transfer charges and receives the payment minus the transfer charges
5 If required, add or enter Client Reference up to 16 characters and will appear as part of the narrative on the debit account and beneficiary's statements and on payment reports.
6 If required, enter Intermediary Bank details:
  • Select Bank Code Type
  • Search and select Bank Code
If the intermediary bank input field is not visible for your international payment instruction, please contact your ANZ Customer Service Centre for assistance with updating your organisation’s permissions.
7 If required, enter Remittance Information up to 140 characters that will appear on the Beneficiary Advice, the Payment Detail Report and Field 70 of the SWIFT MT103 message
8 If required, enter Invoice Details up to 80 x 60 lines of information that will appear on the Beneficiary Advice and the Payment Detail Report
9 If required, tick Email Beneficiary Advice and enter email address(es) up to 255 characters, separated by a comma
  • You cannot add or edit the email address if the checkbox is not ticked
  • Pre-populated email addresses are derived from the beneficiary details in the Beneficiaries list
  • A sample Beneficiary Advice can be found here
10 If required, enter FX Details for this beneficiary if the debit and credit currencies are different and you have selected Individual Debits.
11 Enter a Debit Advice Description up to 140 characters that will appear as part of the narrative on the Debit Advice.
12 If required, click Attach Documents to upload doc, docx, jpg, jpeg or pdf supporting documents for this payment instruction, with up to five files not exceeding a total size of 5MB.
13 If required, enter Additional Information for regulatory requirements.
If you complete the BOP form in ANZ Transactive - Global, you do not need to provide a hard copy of the form to the Bank.
How to complete the Balance of Payment (BOP)
FIELD HOW TO COMPLETE
Provided BOP form manually to bank If you have provided the BOP (Balance Of Payments) form manually to the bank, select this checkbox.
NOTE: If selected the remaining fields will no longer be visible.
Amount in Words* Enter the amount of the payment in words.
NOTE: This will be auto-populated in English if an amount has been entered.
BOP Transaction Code 1* Select the appropriate BOP Transaction Code.
BOP Transaction Description 1* This will be auto-populated based on the BOP Transaction Code 1 selected. You can update the description if required. 
BOP CCY1* This will be auto-populated based on the Payment Currency or Debit Currency being used.
BOP Amount 1* Enter the BOP Amount for BOP Transaction Code 1.
BOP Transaction Code 2 If required, select the appropriate BOP Transaction Code.
NOTE: This needs to be a different Transaction Code to BOP Transaction Code 1.
BOP Transaction Description 2 This will be auto-populated based on the BOP Transaction Code 2 selected. You can update the description if required. 
BOP CCY 2 If you are using BOP Amount 2, enter the transaction currency.
BOP Amount 2 Enter the BOP Amount 2 for BOP Transaction Code 2.
NOTE: BOP Amount 1 plus BOP Amount 2 should equal the total BOP amount.
Unit Code* Enter the 9 digit Unit Code of your organisation.
Beneficiary Resident Country/Region Name* This will be auto-populated based on the remitter’s bank country name.
Beneficiary Resident Country/Region Code* This will be auto-populated based on the remitter’s bank country name.
Payment Nature* Select the nature of the payment from the drop-down list.
NOTE: This should be based on the declaration document.
Tax Free Goods* Select Yes or No.
Type of Payment* Select the type of payment from the drop down list.
Contract Number* If there is a contract for this transaction, enter the Contract Number or enter "N/A".
Invoice Number* If there is an invoice for this transaction, enter the Invoice Number or enter "N/A".
Safe Batch/Registration Number Enter the 20 digit Safe Batch/Registration Number or enter "N/A".
BOP Reporting Type* Select the BOP reporting type from the drop-down list.
17 Click Save
18 If required, choose your FX Details* option:
Dynamic
Obtain real-time foreign exchange rates for cross-currency payments. Once the payment is approved, it moves to a Needs Rate status.
Contract
  • To obtain a FX Contract, contact your local ANZ Markets dealer. Contracts will appear in ANZ Transactive – Global for selection after they have been booked.
  • To utilise a FX contract in a payment, the contract needs to have the same value date as the payment.
  • You can use up to five Contracts unless you select Use Dynamic Rate for Remaining Amount. In this case, only four Contracts can be added.
Choose a prebooked foreign exchange rate:
STEP ACTION
1 Select Contract from Rate Type
2 Click Add FX Contracts
3 Choose FX Contract ID(s) to apply to the payment instruction
4 Click OK
5 Enter Utilised Amount for the payment amount
6 If required, tick Use Dynamic Rate for Remaining Amount for the balance which is not covered by the pre-booked contract(s)
19 Do you wish to continue the payment at a later stage?
  • Yes - Click Save as Draft, then click OK and Close Payment to exit out to the payment and return to the Current Payments screen. Payment will be in a Draft status.
  • No - Continue steps below
20 Click Review & Submit
21 Click Submit
RESULT: Payment has been submitted and pending approval.

*A non-transactable daily mid-rate (which does not include a margin) has been used to estimate the transaction value for the purpose of approval discretions and available funds checking. The actual exchange rate for the transaction will be displayed when a trade or contract is applied to the payment request.

Errors and Alerts
Error and alert messages such as 'fields validations' display information about the impacted field(s) and highlights the field(s) in red. Error messages are specific to the payment method types, fields available and particulars validations. You can update the information within the impacted field(s) and continue processing the payment.

Next Steps

When the payment has been successfully submitted and is now in a Pending Approval status, you can choose from the following on-screen options:

  • Request Payment Summary Report - Download in CSV, PDF and XLSX
  • Save Payment as Template - View in Templates menu. Use Payment Template.
  • View this Payment in a Pending Approval status
  • Click OK to close the payment and return to the Current Payments screen
